Description

This webinar will introduce participants to ideas of Health at Every Size, sizeism, fat positivity, and fat liberation within the context of social work practice. Attendees will have space to reflect on their own weight-based implicit biases and consider how these may impact rapport-building, assessment, and intervention. Additionally, participants will receive tools to support, affirm, and advocate for their fat clients, along with guidance on how to develop and implement their own fat-centered interventions.

Objectives

1. Define sizeism.
2. Identify ethical considerations related to practice with fat individuals.
3. Describe one affirming practice to address sizeism.

Instructors

Daicia Price, Ph.D, LMSW, QMHP, CMHP, Clinical Associate Professor of Social Work, and FLOURISH Director

Ryan Hires (he/they), LLMSW, is a recent graduate of the University of Michigan School of Social Work. Ryan currently works as a mental health therapist at My Relationships Project, a private practice that specializes in neurodivergent-affirming services. In addition, Ryan is the creator and facilitator of the Fat Positivity Support Group, a free community-based support group for those on the higher end of the size spectrum to build affinity, improve self-esteem, and promote holistic wellness.

CE Approval Statement

The University of Michigan School of Social Work, provider #1212, is approved to offer social work continuing education by the Association of Social Work Boards (ASWB) Approved Continuing Education (ACE) program. Regulatory boards are the final authority on courses accepted for continuing education credit. ACE provider approval period: 5/15/2026–5/15/2029. Social workers completing this course receive 1 ethics continuing education credit and 2 general continuing education credits.

Social workers licensed in Michigan may claim 2 implicit bias hours.
