Description
This course introduces participants to the growing and impactful field of mental health evaluations for immigration cases, an area of work that has become even more important as immigration enforcement priorities and practices impact more individuals, families, and communities than ever before. Participants will explore various forms of immigration relief and understand the critical role mental health evaluations play in supporting individuals applying for each type of relief.
This course will help participants understand the legal context, ethical considerations, and the vital importance of cultural competence and humility in conducting mental health evaluations for immigration cases. In addition to introducing participants to this growing field, participants will also leave with an understanding of current trends, areas for social work advocacy and intervention, and how they can better support those going through the immigration application process.
Objectives
- Describe the different forms of immigration relief for which mental health evaluations are commonly requested.
- Identify ethical conflicts and considerations that can occur when conducting mental health evaluations for immigration cases.
- Discuss how cultural competence and humility can impact the evaluation process and outcomes.
Agenda
- 9:00am–9:30am Overview of mental health evaluations for immigration cases
- 9:30am–10:15am Forms of immigration relief and the role of mental health evaluations
- 10:15am–11:15am Ethical considerations: Conflicts of interests, dual roles, advocacy, and self-care
- 11:15am–11:30pm Role of cultural competence and humility
- 11:30am–12:00pm Opportunities for social workers and other mental health providers to support those applying for immigration relief.
