Preparing clinical practitioners to deliver behavioral health services to populations experiencing addiction and co-occurring mental and physical health needs

The Addictions Certificate Program (ACP) is designed for direct clinical practitioners - social workers, nurses, and psychologists - who deliver or plan to deliver behavioral healthcare services to addicted populations that may present with additional complex and comorbid mental health and physical health needs. Participants will gain assessment, intervention, and consultation knowledge and skills for practical application in the workplace, and will link with a peer learning community to discuss and explore new skills and ideas.

The Addictions Certificate Program offers 90 hours of education across three tracks. Participants are asked to participate in at least one live Q&A session with the certificate director per track. The learning modules for each track are listed below:

Addictions Track 1: Addictions Treatment Foundational Skills

  1. Engagement, and Understanding Difficult Behavior Change
  2. Stages of Change and Motivational Enhancement
  3. Motivational Enhancement Skills I
  4. Motivational Enhancement Skills II
  5. The Brain Chemistry of Addiction, Withdrawal and PAWS
  6. The Twelve-Step Model and other Peer-led Resources
  7. Cognitive Behavioral Approaches (CBT)
  8. Stage-matched Group Work
  9. Behavioral Addictions
  10. Transferring Addictions / Harm Reduction 

Addictions Track 2: Addictions Treatment Processes & Clinical Interventions

  1. Screening and Referral
  2. Treatment Orientation & Psychoeducation
  3. Multiaxial Assessment, Case Presentation and Treatment Planning
  4. Stages of Change and Treatment: Measuring and Documenting Progress
  5. Family Systems and Natural Supports
  6. Detoxification Approaches and Strategies
  7. Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET)
  8. Twelve-Step Facilitation Therapy (TSF)
  9. A Blended Intervention Approach
  10. Empowerment Case Management 

Addictions Track 3: Addictions Treatment with Complex & Comorbid Populations

  1. Dual Disorders Treatment Frameworks
  2. Cultural Humility and Competence
  3. Legal System / Criminal Justice Interface
  4. Addiction and Spirituality
  5. Physical Health Concerns, including Communicable Diseases
  6. Addiction and Personality Disorders
  7. Addiction and Anxiety Disorders, including PTS/D
  8. Addiction and Mood Disorders
  9. Addiction and Thought Disorders
  10. Recovery-oriented Prescribing Practices & Pharmacological Recovery Supports 

 

All ACP content has been pre-approved by the Michigan Certification Board for Addiction Professionals (MCBAP) and is applicable for "specific" continuing education contact hours. Because of the unique design features of the University of Michigan Addictions Certificate Program, these CE contact hours are designated as formal classroom education hours, rather than home study contact hours.
